Bagalkot Bypoll Campaign To Heat Up This Weekend

Nation | Bagalkot Bypoll Campaign To Heat Up This Weekend

Bagalkot : With the by-election campaign in Bagalkot gradually picking up, the political heat is expected to rise sharply over the weekend once the ongoing legislature session concludes, paving the way for full-fledged campaigning by top leaders. The contest is shaping up into a direct fight between the ruling Congress and the BJP, with both parties gearing up for an intense battle. While the Congress is focused on retaining the seat it won in 2023 through the late HY Meti, the BJP is making a determined push to wrest it back with former MLA Veeranna Charantimath. Candidates from both sides — BJP’s Veeranna Charantimath and Congress nominee Umesh Meti — have already begun door-to-door campaigns across the constituency. However, the absence of senior leaders so far has kept the campaign relatively subdued, with most of them engaged in the ongoing Assembly session. This is set to change from the weekend, when leaders from both camps are expected to descend on the constituency. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is said to be closely monitoring the election, is likely to campaign for a couple of days along with his cabinet colleagues and party MLAs. Given the political and personal significance of the seat, his presence is expected to provide momentum to the Congress campaign. The constituency’s social dynamics are also playing a crucial role, with Lingayat voters forming a significant segment. Congress is likely to deploy its prominent Lingayat leaders to strengthen its outreach in the region. On the other hand, the BJP is looking to the campaign of senior leader and former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who continues to wield influence among Lingayat voters. Party leaders expect his presence in the constituency for two to three days to energise the cadre and consolidate support. At the grassroots level, both parties have stepped up their outreach efforts. Rajeshwari Charantimath, wife of the BJP candidate, conducted a door-to-door campaign in Navanagar, asserting that women voters are increasingly leaning towards the party, citing development works during Charantimath’s tenure and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, Umesh Meti has begun campaigning in rural pockets, including Jadramakunti village, appealing to voters to extend their support as they did to his father. “You had supported my father with a good margin. I request you to elect me with an even greater margin,” he said.

Poll Official Objects to Govt Ad in Nadia; Alleges Assault

Nation | Poll Official Objects to Govt Ad in Nadia; Alleges Assault

Kolkata: A man engaged in poll duties was allegedly assaulted during a training session for election duty in West Bengal's Nadia district on Friday after he objected to the screening of a government advertisement, officials said. The incident took place at a training centre set up at a school in Ranaghat. According to some of the participants, a government advertisement featuring Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was displayed on a projector before the session began, prompting objections from some polling officials who said the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was in force. "When the advertisement was shown, a few of us raised concerns as to why such content was being screened during an election-related training session," a poll official present at the venue said. One of the poll officials, identified as Saikat Chattopadhyay, alleged that he was assaulted for protesting against the screening. "I questioned why a government advertisement carrying the chief minister's image was being shown despite the MCC being in force. I was then physically assaulted and threatened," he claimed. He also raised concerns over the safety of election personnel. "If such incidents occur during training itself, it raises serious questions about the security of poll staff during the elections," he said. Following the incident, several polling personnel reportedly halted the training session and staged a protest at the venue. Tension prevailed in the area for some time, sources said. Nadia District Magistrate Srikanta Palli said the matter was being looked into. "We have received information about the incident and are verifying the facts. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings," he said. Reacting to the incident, BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar criticised the state administration and urged the Election Commission to intervene. "A poll staffer has been assaulted. If such incidents take place, it will be difficult to ensure free and fair elections under the present dispensation," he said, demanding prompt action by the Commission.

Coal Scam: Delhi Court Acquits Vijay Darda, son, and Ex Coal Secretary H.C. Gupta

Nation | Coal Scam: Delhi Court Acquits Vijay Darda, son, and Ex Coal Secretary H.C. Gupta

New Delhi: A special court on Friday acquitted former MP Vijay Darda, his son Devendra Darda and former coal secretary H C Gupta in a case related to coal block allocation after finding no evidence to support the charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy or misconduct. Bringing an end to a high-profile legal battle that spanned over a decade, special CBI Judge Sunena Sharma also acquitted Manoj Kumar Jayaswal and M/s AMR Iron and Steel Private Limited. The CBI registered more than 50 cases regarding the alleged coal scam. The present case stemmed from the first chargesheet filed by the federal agency in connection with coal block allocation in Bander in Maharashtra. According to the prosecution, AMR Iron and Steel Private Limited, in conspiracy with Gupta, submitted false information in its application to the Union Ministry of Coal to secure allocation of the coal block. It alleged that Darda, then a sitting Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra, wrote letters to the Prime Minister's Office recommending allocation of the coal block to the company. The court, however, rejected CBI's allegations. According to the evidence before it, the relevant information was already available to authorities during the allocation process, and no witness corroborated claims of inducement or deception, it said. According to the court, the prosecution failed to prove charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy. After examining the evidence and testimonies, the court found no evidence to support these allegations. It emerged during the trial that there was no evidence to establish any false or dishonest intent in the company's application or feedback form. Records showed that all relevant information was already available with authorities during the allocation process, and no witness corroborated claims of inducement or deception, the judgement said. The court also noted that the alleged Rs 24.6 crore transactions were not substantiated, and no link was established between the payments, the coal block allocation, or the letters written by Vijay Darda. Additionally, there was no evidence to suggest that the letters influenced the allocation decision, it said. The detailed judgement is awaited.

AI Enters Keralam's Poll Battlefield, Reshaping Campaigns

Nation | AI Enters Keralam's Poll Battlefield, Reshaping Campaigns

Kochi : A sea of people holding BJP flags and walking behind a political figure standing atop a jeep, waving to them, is not a public rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah, but an AI-generated video of a saffron party candidate contesting the Kerala election. In the AI-generated clip, BJP candidate P R Sivasankar, contesting the April 9 polls from the Ernakulam Assembly seat, appears to lead a large procession, with men, women and even children lining the streets, holding Indian tricolours and BJP flags. The visuals are striking and convincing. As campaigning gathers pace ahead of the crucial elections, war rooms of major political parties, including the Left, the Congress and the NDA, are busy creating such content to influence voters in an increasingly digitally driven society. Compared to previous Assembly polls, political messaging this time is increasingly shaped by synthetic videos and edited visuals that blur the line between reality and fiction, making it challenging for voters to tell what is real and what is not. Yes, the real election war is aggressively fought in the digital space as well. Congress candidate from Angamaly and sitting MLA Roji M John said the party is using AI-generated videos to convey its ideas to the people. To target the ruling Left over the Sabarimala missing gold issue, the Congress has created AI-generated videos featuring Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other Left leaders, alleging their involvement. John added that, apart from this, individual candidates are also using AI to promote their campaigns in their respective constituencies. "It's all issue based, like the Sabarimala gold loss matter. We did a lot of AI-based videos highlighting the role of the CPI(M) in it," he told PTI. As part of efforts to increasingly reach out to voters, parties are even using AI-generated videos featuring their late leaders. John said the Congress is using images of late party stalwarts such as Oommen Chandy to create AI content for its poll campaign. Kannan, who manages Sivasankar's social media presence, said that most AI content generation has been delegated to third parties -- such as influencers, public relations (PR) agencies, and bloggers -- a trend common across political parties. "Some of them are creating content using Prime Minister Narendra Modi's image to spread the party's message and highlight candidates' plans for a constituency and the state as a whole," Kannan said, speaking to PTI. The content is created based on the voter base of a particular constituency and targeted groups, such as younger people who are not interested in politics, he said. "We are also planning to launch a chatbot to better connect with voters," he added. Giving an example of AI-generated content, he said it can be used to depict the development that would take place in a particular area if a BJP candidate wins. "The development projects will be shown like a slideshow in the background of the candidate's image," Kannan explained. The BJP ally Twenty20 party is also not averse to using AI-generated content as part of its political campaign, but some of the third-party agencies it has engaged for public relations work do not share the same view. Jayan J Nath, whose agency is among several engaged by the party to manage its social media campaign, said he was not in favour of using AI-generated content as it raises "credibility" concerns. "We promote candidates and the party through digital marketing. We use traditional platforms such as Google and Meta for this. It is very straightforward -- no AI, nothing. We do not use any AI tools, as we do not want to do anything that could affect the credibility of the campaign," he said. However, Leena, the campaign manager of Twenty20, does not agree with this view. "It is not Twenty20's policy to avoid using AI," she said while speaking to PTI. While the Congress and the BJP are actively using AI in their political campaigns, the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) has adopted a more minimalist approach. Speaking to PTI, Nripan Das, the social media manager of State Finance Minister K N Balagopal, said AI has not been used extensively in the campaign of the senior CPI(M) leader, who is contesting from the Kottarakkara Assembly seat. "We have used AI for a poster and for highlighting some of the government's initiatives, such as providing menstrual cups and sanitary pad disposal units in schools," he said. Not only those managing candidates' social media content, but even the public takes differing stances on the use of AI-videos. Shaji M, a hairdresser from Thiruvananthapuram, sees it largely as entertainment and does not take them seriously. Raju, a milk vendor from Adoor in Pathanamthitta district, expressed a similar view. "I break into a smile every time I see AI videos related to the Sabarimala gold loss issue," he said. On the other hand, Binu Sankar, a banker from Kollam, said that while such AI reels are amusing, "The issues they highlight remain in people's minds because they are presented humorously."
