Who Is the Hero; Thiruveer Shares Struggles Behind Spotlight

Entertainment | Who Is the Hero; Thiruveer Shares Struggles Behind Spotlight

Young actor Thiruveer, who earned appreciation for his performances in Masooda and Pre Wedding Shoot, recently shared the lesser-seen side of his journey in the film industry—one filled with quiet struggles and moments of self-doubt. Speaking about the challenges of growing without a strong backing, Thiruveer recalled an incident during a flight. When a co-passenger from the film industry asked about his profession, he replied that he worked in the cinema. However, when pressed further about his role, he hesitated and said he was an assistant director. When asked about his current project, he mentioned OG. Opening up about such experiences, he said, “Every alternate day, people ask me who the hero of my film is without realizing that I am the hero.” Reflecting on his film Masooda, he revealed that some people even assumed he was a driver on set rather than the lead actor. Despite such incidents, Thiruveer says he has learned to take it in stride and not let it affect him. A similar situation occurred during the shoot of his upcoming film Bhagavanthudu, directed by GG Vihar, where many failed to recognize him as the main lead. Rather than chasing instant fame, Thiruveer has consistently chosen content-driven roles, slowly carving a niche for himself. With projects like Bhagavanthudu and Papam Pratap in the pipeline, the actor now seems poised to step into bigger opportunities—on his own terms.

Epic Avatars on the Rise as Mahesh Babu, Prabhas Join Divine League

Entertainment | Epic Avatars on the Rise as Mahesh Babu, Prabhas Join Divine League

Tollywood is witnessing a renewed fascination with divine and epic characters, with Mahesh Babu and Prabhas emerging as the latest stars to embrace spiritually powerful roles on screen. Superstar Mahesh Babu has entered the elite “divine club” by portraying Lord Ram in his upcoming film Varanasi, directed by S. S. Rajamouli. Reflecting on Mahesh’s transformation, Rajamouli said, “On the first day, when Mahesh walked in Lord Rama’s get-up for the photoshoot, I had goosebumps. Mahesh has the charm of Krishna, but the calmness of Rama. Still, I was confident. I even set that photo as my wallpaper and then removed it so that no one would see it.” Earlier, Prabhas stepped into a similar space by portraying Lord Ram in Adipurush. He continues to explore spiritually rooted and larger-than-life characters, including a role associated with Lord Shiva in Kannappa. His versatility was also evident in his portrayal of Karna in Kalki 2898 AD, underlining his willingness to experiment across genres. Director Dolly, known for socio-fantasy Gopala Gopala, believes this is a celebratory phase for divine storytelling in cinema. He said, “Despite his stardom, Pawan Kalyan agreed to portray Lord Krishna in Gopala Gopala because he appreciated the refinements we made to his character in the Telugu adaptation. Unlike in the Hindi original Oh My God, we made certain cultural adjustments that resonated with Telugu audiences.” He added, “We pray to Lord Krishna, Shiva, and Hanuman at home, yet when they are depicted in films, we call it mythology—which is unfair. Ramayana and Mahabharata are not myths; they are historical epics that took place in the real world.” Taking a dig at Western superheroes, he remarked, “Characters like Spider-Man and Superman are purely fictional, whereas our gods are real and continue to bless us.” Writer Gopi Mohan highlighted that Telugu cinema has a rich legacy in portraying divine and epic characters. He noted that stars like the legendary NTR and ANR, followed by Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Jr NTR, have all explored such roles and proven their mettle, placing Tollywood ahead in this space. With top stars continuing to take on divine avatars, the “divine club” in Tollywood is expanding, blending devotion, storytelling, and cinematic ambition on a grand scale, he concludes.

Bagalkot Bypoll Campaign To Heat Up This Weekend

Nation | Bagalkot Bypoll Campaign To Heat Up This Weekend

Bagalkot : With the by-election campaign in Bagalkot gradually picking up, the political heat is expected to rise sharply over the weekend once the ongoing legislature session concludes, paving the way for full-fledged campaigning by top leaders. The contest is shaping up into a direct fight between the ruling Congress and the BJP, with both parties gearing up for an intense battle. While the Congress is focused on retaining the seat it won in 2023 through the late HY Meti, the BJP is making a determined push to wrest it back with former MLA Veeranna Charantimath. Candidates from both sides — BJP’s Veeranna Charantimath and Congress nominee Umesh Meti — have already begun door-to-door campaigns across the constituency. However, the absence of senior leaders so far has kept the campaign relatively subdued, with most of them engaged in the ongoing Assembly session. This is set to change from the weekend, when leaders from both camps are expected to descend on the constituency. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is said to be closely monitoring the election, is likely to campaign for a couple of days along with his cabinet colleagues and party MLAs. Given the political and personal significance of the seat, his presence is expected to provide momentum to the Congress campaign. The constituency’s social dynamics are also playing a crucial role, with Lingayat voters forming a significant segment. Congress is likely to deploy its prominent Lingayat leaders to strengthen its outreach in the region. On the other hand, the BJP is looking to the campaign of senior leader and former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who continues to wield influence among Lingayat voters. Party leaders expect his presence in the constituency for two to three days to energise the cadre and consolidate support. At the grassroots level, both parties have stepped up their outreach efforts. Rajeshwari Charantimath, wife of the BJP candidate, conducted a door-to-door campaign in Navanagar, asserting that women voters are increasingly leaning towards the party, citing development works during Charantimath’s tenure and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, Umesh Meti has begun campaigning in rural pockets, including Jadramakunti village, appealing to voters to extend their support as they did to his father. “You had supported my father with a good margin. I request you to elect me with an even greater margin,” he said.

Trump Signature to Appear on US Currency, Ending 165-Year Tradition

World | Trump Signature to Appear on US Currency, Ending 165-Year Tradition

WASHINGTON: U.S. paper currency will bear ‌President Donald Trump's signature starting this summer, the first time a sitting president has signed American money, the Treasury Department said on Thursday. The redesigned notes, planned to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, will also for the first time in 165 years drop the signature of the U.S. treasurer, who reports to the Treasury Secretary and oversees the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the U.S. Mint and other Treasury functions. The first $100 bills with Trump's signature and that of U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be printed in June, followed by other bills in subsequent months. The new bills may take several weeks to circulate through banks. The Treasury is still producing notes bearing the signatures of former President Joe Biden's Treasury secretary, Janet Yellen, and former Treasurer Lynn Malerba. Malerba will be the last of an unbroken line of treasurers whose signatures have appeared on U.S. federal currency since 1861, when the U.S. government first issued it. The signature change is the latest effort by the Trump administration and its allies to put the president's name on buildings, institutions, government programs, warships and coins. A federal arts panel, whose members Trump appointed, approved last week the design for a commemorative gold coin with Trump's image. Bessent said in a statement that the move was appropriate for the U.S. 250th ‌anniversary, given strong U.S. economic growth and financial stability during Trump's second term. "There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial," Bessent said. An effort for a circulating $1 Trump coin was set back by laws prohibiting the depiction of living individuals on U.S. coins. A statute governing the printing of Federal Reserve notes gives the Treasury broad discretion to change designs to guard against counterfeiting. The law requires keeping certain elements, including the words "In God We Trust," and only allows portraits of deceased individuals. The overall designs of bills will not change, except for Trump's signature replacing the Treasurer's, Treasury officials said. A mock-up of the $100 bill with Trump's signature was not immediately available. Malerba, the former treasurer, declined comment on the Trump administration's move. Her predecessor, Jovita Carranza, who served as treasurer in Trump's first term, called the change "a powerful symbol of American resilience, the enduring strength of free enterprise and the promise of continued greatness." The current treasurer, Brandon Beach, whose name has not appeared on the currency, also issued a supportive statement, saying Trump was the architect of a "golden age economic revival."

US Deploys Uncrewed Drone Boats in Conflict With Iran

World | US Deploys Uncrewed Drone Boats in Conflict With Iran

NEW YORK: The United States has deployed uncrewed drone speedboats for patrols as part of its operations against Iran, the Pentagon said, ‌the first time Washington has confirmed using such vessels in an active conflict. The deployment of the vessels -- which can be used for surveillance or kamikaze strikes -- has not been previously reported. It comes despite a series of setbacks in the U.S. Navy’s years‑long effort to field a fleet of uncrewed surface vessels, Reuters reported last year. Uncrewed vessels have risen to prominence in recent years after Ukraine used explosive‑laden speedboats to inflict significant damage on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Iran has used sea drones to attack oil tankers in the Gulf at least twice since the U.S. and Israel began strikes nearly a month ago. There was no indication the U.S. had used uncrewed vessels for offensive strikes. In response to Reuters’ questions, Tim Hawkins, a Pentagon spokesperson for Central Command, said unmanned vessels built by Maryland-based BlackSea, known as the Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft, or GARC, had been used for patrols as part of the U.S. campaign against Iran, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury.” “U.S. forces continue to employ unmanned systems in the Middle East region, including surface drone assets like the GARC. This platform, in particular, has successfully logged over 450 underway hours and more than ‌2,200 nautical miles during maritime patrols in support of Operation Epic Fury,” Hawkins said in a statement. Hawkins declined to name any of the other unmanned systems being deployed. BlackSea declined to comment for this story. NAVY STRUGGLES WITH DRONE BOATS The U.S. has for years been trying to build a fleet of autonomous uncrewed surface and underwater vessels, as a cheaper and faster alternative to manned ships and submarines, particularly to counter China’s growing naval power in the Pacific. The effort, however, has fallen behind schedule and been dogged by technical problems, cost concerns and a series of testing setbacks. Last year, Reuters reported the GARC, an angular speedboat about five meters long, was involved in multiple performance and safety issues, including one where it collided with another boat at speed during a military test. In recent weeks, during another failed test in the Middle East, one GARC boat became inoperable, according to a source who was briefed on the matter. Hawkins declined to comment on the testing setbacks. “The GARC is an emerging capability and part of a fleet of surface drones operated by U.S. 5th Fleet to enhance awareness of what’s happening in regional waters,” he said.

Sanju Is A Player MS Dhoni Would Want To Pass The Baton To : Irfan Pathan

Sports | Sanju Is A Player MS Dhoni Would Want To Pass The Baton To : Irfan Pathan

The three legends of the TATA IPL and Indian cricket, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, will be keen to once again show what they are capable of as Season 19 gets underway tomorrow. Speaking on JioStar’s ‘IPL Today Live’, JioStar experts Aakash Chopra and Irfan Pathan shared their thoughts on MS Dhoni’s batting position and diminishing returns, Virat Kohli’s fitness, and which of the three is likely to have the best season. Speaking on JioStar’s ‘IPL Today Live’, JioStar expert Irfan Pathan reckoned that the addition of Sanju Samson to the CSK setup could be a sign of TATA IPL 2026 being MS Dhoni’s last: “It looks like this will be MS Dhoni’s last season. The signs are there because, if you look at the Chennai setup, they have brought in a wicketkeeper-batsman who can play for the next few years. You can build your team around him and he can be the face of the franchise, that is Sanju Samson. He has also upgraded himself in terms of form in international cricket. He has just won a World Cup and has been batting fantastically well. That is one player MS Dhoni would want to pass the baton to, someone who has the caliber to do all that and whom even the fans can identify and connect with. With Sanju’s arrival, I feel Dhoni can now say that maybe it is time for him to pass on that baton. But should this have happened earlier? Because I feel that a player like MS Dhoni cannot be just a two-over player. You do not build your legacy like that. So yes, I think the time is right.” On MS Dhoni’s ability of finishing games in the TATA IPL: “When CSK won their last trophy in Ahmedabad, there were already talks that he was coming too low down the order, even before those discussions gained momentum. But as he grew older, he also had the knee problem. So, in his mind, he was clear about his role, that he would come and bat in the last two overs and finish the game. But what happened? He was not able to finish those games. A few years ago, when Sandeep Sharma was bowling to him in the final over, MS Dhoni made that match interesting but could not finish it. We had not seen that from MS Dhoni before. That is happening more frequently now. So, if you are playing, you have to take more responsibility for your side and bat for at least four or five overs. It will be beneficial for the team.” Speaking on JioStar’s ‘IPL Today Live’, JioStar expert Aakash Chopra spoke about who, among Dhoni, Kohli or Rohit, will have the best season: “The focus will be on Virat Kohli again because the guy is so fit. Yes, there are gaps between series and he felt the pinch of those gaps in Australia, but once he started scoring runs, he found a way to be super consistent for months. So, the kind of fitness that he has achieved over a period of time makes him the best suited, also because he is an opener. So, he has more time to work himself into form. The same is true for Rohit Sharma as well, but between the two of them, I still feel Virat Kohli has it a little easier just because of himself. That is the price he has to pay for the kind of fitness and legacy he has built. It is a little difficult for Dhoni as well because he is on the wrong side of 40. For him, to not play anything for 10 months, turn up for the IPL and switch on, and also play at a number where he gets only 10-12 balls, is the toughest thing to do. Then there are also 20 overs of keeping, so his job is perhaps the toughest.” On Rohit Sharma continuing to play in his aggressive style: “When you are part of the batting order that the Mumbai Indians have, it is mandatory to set the tone for Rohit Sharma. Rohit does want to bat a certain way. He has already made his opinion very public. But if you are part of a setup where there is Quinton de Kock at the other end, followed by Tilak, Surya, Hardik, Will Jacks or Sherfane Rutherford, and then Naman Dhir, what else is the option? You need to maximise the 20 overs, which basically means maximising the first six overs. So, yes, Rohit would be expected to bat the same way, see the ball, hit the ball, that is what I am thinking for the entire Mumbai Indians setup, unless the pitch is asking you to play a slightly different brand of cricket.”

No Fans, No Fireworks As Pakistan T20 League Begins With A Hush

Sports | No Fans, No Fireworks As Pakistan T20 League Begins With A Hush

Lahore, Pakistan : The Pakistan Super League got under way with a win for Lahore Qalandars against Hyderabad Kingsmen but without the usual razzmatazz accompanying cricket's shortest format -- or fans. Organisers of the T20 tournament last weekend said that matches would be played without spectators, and at just two venues instead of six, because of the war in the Middle East. Pakistan's government has introduced sweeping austerity measures designed to save fuel, with mounting concerns about supplies as the conflict drags on. As a result, Thursday night's opening ceremony -- last year marked by spectacular fireworks -- was cancelled and the green and white seats of Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium were empty. Fans such as Nadia Tufail, 40, had been eagerly awaiting the start of the 44-match tournament involving eight teams, which runs until May 3. "Watching a match in the stadium has a completely different kind of enjoyment. There is a large crowd, you get to meet different people and the experience becomes even more exciting," she said as she watched the match at home. "There is cheering, noise and celebration, which makes the atmosphere more lively and thrilling. In my opinion, the government's policy this time was due to the war situation, but such a policy should not be implemented every time. "People should be given the opportunity to go to the stadium and enjoy the match there because watching at home is not nearly as enjoyable." Before the game the normal bustle of spectators arriving at the ground was replaced by a hush, with only armed police and soldiers keeping watch. Inside, ground staff prepared the pitch and television cameras were set up, with little of the hubbub of expectation and excitement from the gathering crowds. "For us as well it's a different experience without a crowd, and we will miss it," said Pakistan's former captain, Babar Azam, who plays for PSL side Peshawar Zalmi. "The fans will miss it too because they bring a different vibe and give players a big boost. Every team has its own fans, and you get a unique kind of support there. "We will try to play good cricket so that people enjoy watching on TV, and we encourage everyone to support their teams through television and social media." Irfan Khan Niazi, from Hyderabad Kingsmen, agreed but said there was no choice. "We can't enjoy the game the same way without a crowd but given the situation, we have to make the most of it," he said. Niazi was on the losing side on Thursday night as Lahore were easy winners by 69 runs.

Olympic Women's Sport To Be Limited To 'Biological Females'

Sports | Olympic Women's Sport To Be Limited To 'Biological Females'

Lausanne : The International Olympic Committee said on Thursday only "biological females" will be allowed to compete in women's events, preventing transgender women from competing. The IOC is re-introducing testing for gender to determine eligibility to take part in women's events from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics onwards. The move will also rule out many athletes with differences in sexual development (DSD). In a major shift of policy, the IOC is abandoning rules it brought in in 2021 which allowed individual federations to decide their own policy and is instead implementing a policy across all Olympic sports. "Eligibility for any female category event at the Olympic Games or any other IOC event, including individual and team sports, is now limited to biological females, determined on the basis of a one-time SRY gene screening," the IOC said in a statement. They will be carried out through a saliva sample, cheek swab or blood sample. It will be done once in an athlete's lifetime. IOC president Kirsty Coventry said: "The policy we have announced is based on science and has been led by medical experts. "At the Olympic Games even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat. "So it is absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category. In addition, in some sports it would simply not be safe." In a press conference later, Coventry added: "I do feel that this policy is a policy that is supporting equality and fairness and the protection of the safety on the field of play." - Removes potential Trump clash - The new policy removes a potential source of conflict between the IOC and US President Donald Trump as the Los Angeles Olympics comes onto the horizon. Trump issued an executive order banning transgender athletes from women's sport soon after he came to office. The US leader later took credit for the IOC's new policy in a post on his Truth Social network later Thursday. "Congratulations to the International Olympic Committee on their decision to ban Men from Women's Sports," Trump wrote. "This is only happening because of my powerful Executive Order, standing up for Women and Girls!" While sports such as swimming, athletics, cycling and rowing have brought in bans, many others have permitted transgender women to compete in the female category if they lowered their testosterone levels, normally through taking a course of drugs. World Athletics welcomed the change of tack. "We have led the way in protecting women's sport over the last decade," said a spokesperson for track and field's international body. "Attracting and retaining more girls and women into sport requires a fair and level playing field where there is no biological glass ceiling. "This means that gender cannot trump biology. A consistent approach across all sport has to be a good thing." Gender testing was first introduced at the 1968 Olympics and last used at the 1996 Atlanta Games but then scrapped after criticism from the scientific community. The new policy is set to face some opposition too, especially in relation to athletes with DSD, the rare condition in which a person's hormones, genes and reproductive organs may have a combination of male and female characteristics. The British Journal of Sports Medicine said in an article this month there was "no scientific data of acceptable quality regarding sport performance advantage of people with DSDs possessing an SRY gene." It added: "Evidence regarding their athletic performance is extremely limited and problematic." The best-known DSD athlete of recent years is South African runner Caster Semenya, the two-time Olympic women's 800m champion who has male XY chromosomes. The IOC is bringing in the new policy after the women's boxing competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics was rocked by a gender row involving Algerian fighter Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan. Khelif and Lin were excluded from the International Boxing Association's 2023 world championships after the IBA said they had failed eligibility tests. However, the IOC allowed them both to compete at the Paris Games, saying they had been victims of "a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA". Both boxers went on to win gold medals. Lin has since been cleared to compete in the female category at events run by World Boxing, the body that will oversee the sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Arundhati Roy, Han Kang Among Winners of US Book Critic Awards

Lifestyle | Arundhati Roy, Han Kang Among Winners of US Book Critic Awards

Washington: A novel by Nobel laureate Han Kang, Karen Hao's examination of artificial intelligence and OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) and a memoir by author Arundhati Roy were among the winners of the annual National Book Critics Circle awards. Han's "We Do Not Part", translated by e. yaewon and Paige Aniyah Morris, addresses a 1948-1949 uprising on Jeju, an island south of the Korean mainland, in which thousands of people were killed. Heather Scott Partington, who chaired the awards' fiction committee, described the novel as "a work of blinding melancholy, bleak weather, and murmuring syntax" and said it "lingers like an atmospheric and arresting dream". The lifetime achievement award went to author and journalist Frances FitzGerald, whose 1972 "Fire in the Lake" was an early and prescient take on the Vietnam War. NPR and PBS were presented with the achievement award honouring institutions that have made significant contributions to book culture. "At a time when some question the value of public, service-minded media, we salute PBS and NPR for all you have done for both book culture and American democracy," said Jacob M. Appel, who chaired the selection process for the award. Winners of other categories: - Hao's "Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI" won for non-fiction. - Roy's "Mother Mary Comes to Me" won for autobiography. - Alex Green's "A Perfect Turmoil: Walter E Fernald and the Struggle to Care for America's Disabled" won for biography. - Kevin Young's "Night Watch" won for poetry. - "Sad Tiger" by Neige Sinno and translated by Natasha Lehrer won the translation prize honouring both the author and translator. The National Book Critics Circle was founded in New York in 1974 and consists of more than 850 critics and editors. Its annual awards honour the best books published in the past year in the United States.
