Meta Shares Drop On Fears US Verdicts Open Door To Deluge Of Lawsuits

World | Meta Shares Drop On Fears US Verdicts Open Door To Deluge Of Lawsuits

Meta Platforms shares dropped 7% on Thursday after two verdicts holding it liable for harm to young users sparked fears the social media giant may have to overhaul ‌the design practices that have underpinned its sprawling advertising business. While fines from the U.S. trials in New Mexico and Los Angeles totaled only a few hundred million dollars, experts and investors said the verdicts could open the company to a wave of litigation that sidesteps a federal law, which has long shielded online platforms from liability for user-generated content. That playbook, of targeting platform design, could prove crucial in the thousands of lawsuits in the U.S. alleging that social media platforms have caused harm, potentially resulting in billions of dollars in fines and forcing changes that could shift investor sentiment towards the stocks, experts said. The rulings add a new layer of uncertainty for Meta just as it bets tens of billions of dollars on AI, a move that has already unsettled some investors. "These decisions don't break the business model today, but they raise the range of outcomes around future cash flows and margin structure" Adam Sarhan, CEO of 50 Park Investments, said. Meta investors were "repricing legal and regulatory risk after the recent verdicts," he said. Meta shares were trading near 10-month lows. ‌Alphabet was down 2.8%, while Snapchat-parent Snap slumped 12.5%. The legal battle is likely to be prolonged as both Meta and Google, also found liable in the trials, plan to appeal the verdicts. The Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google liable on Wednesday for a young woman's depression linked to alleged addiction to Instagram and YouTube, awarding $6 million in damages. In the New Mexico case, jurors ordered Meta to pay $375 million for misleading users about the safety of its platforms for children and enabling their exploitation. Snap and TikTok were also defendants in the trial in California. Both settled with the plaintiff before it began. Meta and other social media companies face more than 2,400 cases centralized before a single judge in California federal court over claims their platforms harmed the mental health of young users, with thousands more consolidated in California state court. "Financially, multiple verdicts could total billions of dollars in damages and legal costs, especially if courts hold the company (Meta) liable for platform design rather than just user content," said Ken Mahoney, CEO of Mahoney Asset Management.

Trump Signature to Appear on US Currency, Ending 165-Year Tradition

World | Trump Signature to Appear on US Currency, Ending 165-Year Tradition

WASHINGTON: U.S. paper currency will bear ‌President Donald Trump's signature starting this summer, the first time a sitting president has signed American money, the Treasury Department said on Thursday. The redesigned notes, planned to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, will also for the first time in 165 years drop the signature of the U.S. treasurer, who reports to the Treasury Secretary and oversees the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the U.S. Mint and other Treasury functions. The first $100 bills with Trump's signature and that of U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be printed in June, followed by other bills in subsequent months. The new bills may take several weeks to circulate through banks. The Treasury is still producing notes bearing the signatures of former President Joe Biden's Treasury secretary, Janet Yellen, and former Treasurer Lynn Malerba. Malerba will be the last of an unbroken line of treasurers whose signatures have appeared on U.S. federal currency since 1861, when the U.S. government first issued it. The signature change is the latest effort by the Trump administration and its allies to put the president's name on buildings, institutions, government programs, warships and coins. A federal arts panel, whose members Trump appointed, approved last week the design for a commemorative gold coin with Trump's image. Bessent said in a statement that the move was appropriate for the U.S. 250th ‌anniversary, given strong U.S. economic growth and financial stability during Trump's second term. "There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial," Bessent said. An effort for a circulating $1 Trump coin was set back by laws prohibiting the depiction of living individuals on U.S. coins. A statute governing the printing of Federal Reserve notes gives the Treasury broad discretion to change designs to guard against counterfeiting. The law requires keeping certain elements, including the words "In God We Trust," and only allows portraits of deceased individuals. The overall designs of bills will not change, except for Trump's signature replacing the Treasurer's, Treasury officials said. A mock-up of the $100 bill with Trump's signature was not immediately available. Malerba, the former treasurer, declined comment on the Trump administration's move. Her predecessor, Jovita Carranza, who served as treasurer in Trump's first term, called the change "a powerful symbol of American resilience, the enduring strength of free enterprise and the promise of continued greatness." The current treasurer, Brandon Beach, whose name has not appeared on the currency, also issued a supportive statement, saying Trump was the architect of a "golden age economic revival."

US Deploys Uncrewed Drone Boats in Conflict With Iran

World | US Deploys Uncrewed Drone Boats in Conflict With Iran

NEW YORK: The United States has deployed uncrewed drone speedboats for patrols as part of its operations against Iran, the Pentagon said, ‌the first time Washington has confirmed using such vessels in an active conflict. The deployment of the vessels -- which can be used for surveillance or kamikaze strikes -- has not been previously reported. It comes despite a series of setbacks in the U.S. Navy’s years‑long effort to field a fleet of uncrewed surface vessels, Reuters reported last year. Uncrewed vessels have risen to prominence in recent years after Ukraine used explosive‑laden speedboats to inflict significant damage on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Iran has used sea drones to attack oil tankers in the Gulf at least twice since the U.S. and Israel began strikes nearly a month ago. There was no indication the U.S. had used uncrewed vessels for offensive strikes. In response to Reuters’ questions, Tim Hawkins, a Pentagon spokesperson for Central Command, said unmanned vessels built by Maryland-based BlackSea, known as the Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft, or GARC, had been used for patrols as part of the U.S. campaign against Iran, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury.” “U.S. forces continue to employ unmanned systems in the Middle East region, including surface drone assets like the GARC. This platform, in particular, has successfully logged over 450 underway hours and more than ‌2,200 nautical miles during maritime patrols in support of Operation Epic Fury,” Hawkins said in a statement. Hawkins declined to name any of the other unmanned systems being deployed. BlackSea declined to comment for this story. NAVY STRUGGLES WITH DRONE BOATS The U.S. has for years been trying to build a fleet of autonomous uncrewed surface and underwater vessels, as a cheaper and faster alternative to manned ships and submarines, particularly to counter China’s growing naval power in the Pacific. The effort, however, has fallen behind schedule and been dogged by technical problems, cost concerns and a series of testing setbacks. Last year, Reuters reported the GARC, an angular speedboat about five meters long, was involved in multiple performance and safety issues, including one where it collided with another boat at speed during a military test. In recent weeks, during another failed test in the Middle East, one GARC boat became inoperable, according to a source who was briefed on the matter. Hawkins declined to comment on the testing setbacks. “The GARC is an emerging capability and part of a fleet of surface drones operated by U.S. 5th Fleet to enhance awareness of what’s happening in regional waters,” he said.

West Asia War Pushes Super Rich to Reconsider Hong Kong

World | West Asia War Pushes Super Rich to Reconsider Hong Kong

Anmol Goel, the head of a London-based family office, said his firm was planning to open an outlet in the United Arab Emirates this year to join money managers that have flocked to the Gulf. Then the war began. “We were setting up a new holding company, acquiring banking assets, and purchasing properties. Everything was finalized,” said Goel, the chief executive officer of GACS Ltd., who attended a wealth forum in Hong Kong this week. “It’s still too early to jump to conclusions, but this is what brought me to Hong Kong.” War in the West Asia is giving the super rich one more reason to reconsider Hong Kong, where authorities are trying to reclaim the allure that was lost in recent years amid protests, political controls and pandemic restrictions. They’ve been pitching the financial hub’s low taxes, wide talent pool and a booming equities capital market to bring the wealthy back. A slew of events in Hong Kong this week show the Asian financial hub is regaining traction, especially as investors look for alternatives to Dubai and Abu Dhabi amid a war that’s showing few signs of easing. Singapore is also set to benefit if more money flees the Middle East. Still, many families are taking a wait and see approach to their portfolios. “We are evaluating Zurich, Singapore, and Mumbai as backup entities,” Goel said after attending the Wealth for Good summit. “People say these places are boring, but boring is the new sexy.” XinXi Asset Management, a newly established firm focusing on family offices, is helping at least seven clients move more than $100 million in combined assets from Dubai to Hong Kong, according to Chief Executive Officer Joel Tan. Tan also received six inquiries from Chinese clients seeking to sell their Middle Eastern properties this week alone. Meanwhile, the firm has scrapped its plans to open a Dubai branch despite having started the licensing paperwork due to the war. Hong Kong’s rebound is reflected in the wave of new family offices, which rose 25% to 3,384 at the end of last year from 2023. Each of them manage at least $10 million, according to a Deloitte survey commissioned by the local government. Authorities plan to extend tax concessions for family offices and funds to more asset classes, Christopher Hui, secretary for financial services and the treasury said in a Bloomberg TV interview on Tuesday. The government has seen an increased number of guests from the Middle East for the annual wealth summit, Hui said. A boom in initial public offerings that made the city the busiest venue for listings in the world last year is also bringing in bumper revenue for investment banks. Proceeds raised locally hit a four-year high in 2025, and have started this year with a bang. Wall Street firms and regional counterparts such as UBS Group AG, Citigroup Inc., DBS Group Holdings Ltd. and China Construction Bank Corp. are all adding headcount in Hong Kong this year, as they compete for the city’s $1 trillion private wealth market. “Reputation, trust, and confidence of the market is central to everything,” Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan said at the Bloomberg Family Office Summit on Wednesday. A billionaire who visited the city for the government summit said Hong Kong has been able to regain some trust that was lost during Covid years, when China’s strong influence was seen as hurting the financial industry. The attacks on Dubai will likely benefit Hong Kong and Singapore, though it’s harder for either to attract European ultra-high-net worth individuals given the long distance, the person said, asking not to be named due to sensitivity of speaking about politics. Renewed Energy Gildo Zegna, the billionaire executive chairman of Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna, arrived in Hong Kong this week with a long to-do list: dining with clients, meeting investors, visiting shops and attending Art Basel — all within three days. The first thing he noticed was the traffic, followed by renewed energy inside his store and a line-up at a nearby luxury outlet. “I hadn’t seen these things in Hong Kong for a while,” Zegna, who has a stake with family members in the fashion firm worth about $1.6 billion, said in an interview at his shop in Tsim Sha Tsui. Other money managers for the rich in Hong Kong said their clients are watchful, but steering clear of big asset moves so far. “We haven’t seen actual shifts in the families that we work with in terms of their appetite or the risk tolerances,” said Elton Cheung, the managing partner at VMS Group. Singapore could also see more inflows of money from the Middle East, though some of the super rich are reluctant to move there because it’s too restrictive, according to a wealth executive for a regional bank. A ban on hookahs and vape, as well as strict enforcements against speeding constitute a major deterrence, especially for the uber-rich with fancy sports cars, said the person. Malaysia has become more attractive for many families for cultural reasons and religious closeness. Some are choosing to have assets booked in Singapore but live across the causeway in Johor, or bustling Kuala Lumpur. The extension of the conflict could lead to investors seeking more liquid options, making hedge funds “a good space” for them to look at, VMS’s Cheung said during a panel at the Bloomberg event on Wednesday. “From my own experience, I’ve had more conversations with clients about whether we should invest in China or should we come visit China, arranging trips to get on the ground,” said Aaron Costello, the Singapore-based head of Asia at Cambridge Associates who is responsible for the firm’s investment and research in the region, during a symposium hosted by the Milken Institute in Hong Kong on Monday. “There’s been a thaw, particularly from Europeans, and the Americans are slowly warming up.”

Austria Says Will Ban Social Media For Children Under 14

World | Austria Says Will Ban Social Media For Children Under 14

Vienna : Austria will ban social media for children up to the age of 14 following lengthy negotiations within the ruling coalition, the government said Friday. "It is almost impossible for parents to control their children's consumption" on these platforms, which are designed to make them "deliberately dependent," Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler told a press conference. The government plans to introduce a new compulsory school subject called "Media and Democracy" to help students distinguish truth from falsehood and recognise attempts at anti-democratic influence, according to the proposal. Several European Union countries, including France, Spain and Denmark have announced their intention to establish a digital age of majority for social networks.

Indonesian Kids Brace Themselves For Social Media Ban

World | Indonesian Kids Brace Themselves For Social Media Ban

Jakarta : Bradley Rowen Liu, 11, wonders what he will do with himself once Indonesia's social media ban for under-16s enters into force on Saturday. As things stand, he spends most of his free time on TikTok. The primary schooler is one of about 70 million children the government is hoping to shield from the threats of cyberbullying, pornography and internet addiction. Several countries have proposed teen social media bans since Australia's landmark move in December to stop users under 16 from holding accounts on many popular platforms. But Indonesia is among the first to act as concerns grow over the impact of such apps on kids' mental and physical wellbeing. YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live and Roblox -- deemed "high-risk" platforms by authorities in the Southeast Asian nation -- will from Saturday start deactivating underage accounts. Liu, who says he can easily spend five hours a day on TikTok at weekends, told AFP he worries the ban will leave him driftless. "Maybe I'll do some other activities," he shrugged, without much conviction. "But I think I'm going to ask my dad or my mom to help me access" the video-sharing app, the boy said after class at a private academy in Jakarta where he learns computer coding. - Onus on platforms - "Parents no longer have to fight alone against the giants of the algorithm," communications minister Meutya Hafid said when she announced the ban three weeks ago. Like in Australia, the Indonesian rules place the onus on platforms to regulate teen access. Non-compliance of the ban, which will be phased in over time, will put defaulters at risk of a fine or even a suspension. Indonesia has not said how it plans to monitor implementation, and the communications ministry did not respond to AFP's requests for comment. It is part of a global reckoning over the potential harms of social media for minors. A Los Angeles jury on Wednesday found Meta and YouTube liable for harming a young woman through the "addictive design" of their platforms, ordering the companies to pay $6 million in damages. Britain's upper house of parliament voted this week in favour of banning children from social media, piling pressure on the government to follow suit. - 'Brain rot' - Though annoyed about the looming interdiction, Liu concedes even he is worried about screen addiction. "Sometimes I have to remember to keep track of time... Like when it's a holiday, I kind of get really attached to my phone." A fellow pupil, 15-year-old Maximillian, said he spends too much time on social media, leaving him feeling "unproductive". He supports the ban. Some want the government to go even further. Randi Putra Chaniago, who teaches at the academy, said social media -- including the surreal AI-generated clips known as brain rot -- was a distraction in class. "It's concerning, really, because some of this 'brain rot' content is weird and can disturb children's way of thinking," he said. The 23-year-old, who uses YouTube to teach some classes, said the ban would challenge teachers to find better educational tools. The P2G Indonesian Teachers' Association, for its part, wants the government to ban cellphones in classrooms altogether. - 'Unhealthy use' - YouTube parent company Google said the two platforms have already introduced features allowing parents to limit scrolling time. It said AI tech will be launched in Indonesia by next year to determine a user's age. But "blanket account restrictions... will deprive young people accessing YouTube of the protections, parental controls, and security features we've integrated into supervised accounts", it argued in a statement. TikTok said it would work with the government to ensure "teens can continue to access safe online spaces". And gaming platform Roblox pledged to introduce "additional controls" for minors. Karina Adistiana, an Indonesian educational psychologist, told AFP several studies have shown that intensive social media use is harmful for young people. "Intensive in the sense that social media becomes the child's main world. That's where the danger lies," she said. "Depression, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, anxiety, constantly wanting to check notifications -- those are clearly signs of unhealthy use in children."

Balendra Shah Balen Is Now Nepal's Youngest PM

World | Balendra Shah Balen Is Now Nepal's Youngest PM

Kathmandu : Balendra Shah 'Balen' was on Friday appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal, making him the youngest elected leader to hold the top executive post in the Himalayan nation. President Ramchandra Paudel appointed Balen, the parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), as the prime minister in accordance with the Article 76 (1) of the Constitution, states a notice issued by the President's Office. The 35-year-old rapper-turned-politician has also become the first prime minister from the Madhes region. President Paudel is scheduled to administer oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed prime minister at the President's Office Sheetal Niwas at 12.34 pm, according to Kiran Pokharel, press advisor to the president. A unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist religious tradition will feature during Balens' swearing-in ceremony. The ceremony will comprise elaborate religious rituals including Shankhanad (conch blowing) by seven brahmins, recitation of Vedic hymns or Swasti Bachan by 108 Hindu Batuks or young brahmins and Mangal Bachan or recitation of Buddhist scripture by 107 Lamas, according to sources close to Balen. He is likely to form a small cabinet with the number of ministers ranging between 15 to 18, the sources added. Nepal chose former Kathmandu mayor and fresher Balendra Shah 'Balen' – popular only as Balen – and his RSP to form the next government decimating the traditional parties in the first general elections since last year's violent Gen Z protests that sought generational change and corruption-free regime. The RSP that had projected Balen as the prime ministerial candidate, secured a massive 182 seats out of a total 275 seats in the House of Representatives (HoR), making it eligible to form a majority government under Article 76 (1) of the Constitution. Of the 275 members of the HoR, 165 are elected through direct voting and 110 through proportionate voting. On Thursday, all the newly elected members of the HoR took oath. Balen, the former Kathmandu mayor, defeated four-time prime minister K P Sharma Oli in the Jhapa-5 constituency, a long-standing stronghold of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), by a huge margin.
